Background of the study
Digital communication has transformed everyday language use in Nigeria. In indigenous languages, morpheme segmentation—the process of dividing words into their smallest meaning‐bearing units—is now influenced by texting, social media, and instant messaging. This study evaluates how digital communication affects morpheme segmentation in Nigerian indigenous languages. Traditional segmentation methods, passed down orally, are challenged by the brevity and informality of digital discourse (Okoro, 2023). Recent analyses suggest that online messages often simplify or alter morphemic boundaries, leading to creative yet nonstandard forms. Researchers have noted shifts in affixation and reduplication patterns as speakers adapt to digital formats (Afolabi, 2024). Data gathered from social media posts, SMS conversations, and online forums reveal variability in segmentation strategies, which may impact language preservation and literacy development. This study uses corpus analysis alongside participant interviews to explore how digital media reshapes morpheme segmentation. The findings aim to contribute to theoretical models of morphological processing in digital contexts and to inform language planning strategies that accommodate both innovation and tradition (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although digital communication is ubiquitous, its impact on morpheme segmentation in Nigerian indigenous languages is underexplored. Preliminary evidence indicates that online discourse may lead to inconsistent segmentation practices, yet systematic documentation is lacking (Okoro, 2023). This gap challenges language educators and planners who need to understand whether these changes are temporary or indicative of deeper language evolution. Without robust data, efforts to preserve linguistic integrity and promote effective literacy may be compromised (Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To document morpheme segmentation patterns in digital communication.
To analyze changes in segmentation strategies compared to traditional speech.
To assess the implications for language preservation.
Research questions:
What segmentation strategies emerge in digital communication?
How do these compare with traditional segmentation methods?
What are the long-term implications for language use?
Research Hypotheses:
Digital communication significantly alters morpheme segmentation.
Online texts exhibit simplified segmentation patterns.
Changes in segmentation impact language preservation.
Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant because it clarifies how digital media reshapes morpheme segmentation in Nigerian indigenous languages. Its findings will guide educators, linguists, and policymakers in developing strategies that balance digital innovation with linguistic preservation, ultimately supporting effective literacy and cultural continuity (Okoro, 2023; Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to digital communication texts in Nigerian indigenous languages; excludes spoken discourse outside digital contexts.
Definitions of terms:
Morpheme Segmentation: Dividing words into smallest meaning-bearing units.
Digital Communication: Exchange of information via electronic media.
Indigenous Languages: Native languages traditionally spoken in a region.
